TRAIL MAGIC ON CAMP CREEK BALD 2013

For the third consecutive year, members of the Greeneville Hiking Club performed Trail Magic at Jones Meadow on the summit of Camp Creek Bald. Trail Magic is the act of furnishing hot meals and beverages for the legions of thruhikers on the Appalachian Trail. Each spring, approximately 10,000 hikers attempt the long distance trek of over 2200 miles from Georgia to Maine on the AT each year.

The club set up their outdoor kitchen under several large tents on Friday morning, May 3 and served breakfast, lunch and dinner until Sunday, May 5. Hamburgers and Hot Dogs along with a variety of vegetables, snacks, homemade cookies and breads were served for lunch and dinner. Breakfast consisted of bacon, eggs, pancakes and homemade bread.

According to the log book that was kept, over a hundred hikers were served meals. Since many of the hikers remained for a second meal, over 135 total meals were served.

The thruhikers represented many states from every part of the U.S. plus several foreign countries.

More than 50 meals were served to the workers. Six club members camped on the mountain both nights and 35 members participated in some way.
